Melanie Charles is a Brooklyn-born-and-raised musician of Haitian heritage. She has a background in jazz and opera, and studied at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. She has toured as a backup vocalist, and has done lots of work exploring her heritage through the music of Haiti. Her latest project is a solo album by the name of The Girl With the Green Shoes.
For this album, Melanie Charles teams up with producer D’flower, along with help from Ohbliv and and mejiwhan on a track apiece. What they manage to do over the course of nine songs is to really help Charles step into the spotlight and establish her own unique voice as a solo artist. Overall, I’d classify the album as R&B, but not in any sort of typical way. There is a large part of her identity that has roots in Erykah Badu’s quietly sung, hip hop/soul, but there is just as much her that’s rooted in Nina Simone, from her lower register and jazz-influenced vocal lines, to her lyrical work focused on identity. To further help Charles step beyond her influences, though, we also get an extended look at Melanie Charles, accomplished flutist. What’s really impressive, though, is that it doesn’t feel tacked on – it works as part of the overall sound of the album. First and foremost, though, this album is about Charles on the mic, and she does a really excellent job of grabbing your attention, singing with excellent tone, dynamics, confidence, charisma, and melodic sensibility. She does all of this while also while lyrically taking on a walk in her shoes, exploring everything from personal relationships to heritage as a Haitian American to religion.
The Girl With the Green Shoes doesn’t come together perfectly, but it’s well on its way to establishing Melanie Charles as an artist with a real talent and a really unique musical point of view. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for her next project, because I’m certainly excited to see where she takes her music from here.
