Yan Pascal Tortelier's recording of the 1900 full orchestral version of the Requiem is one of the finest in the catalogue. The orchestration may, or may not, have been undertaken by Faure but is, in its own way, just as enjoyable as the 'original' version of 1893. The recording quality is quite superb; the Birmingham chorus sing like angels; the BBC Philharmonic are a splendid ensemble; the two soloists have been perfectly chosen. Tortelier has this music in his blood and directs a performance that is perfectly paced, beautifully phrased and extremely moving. If you want a recording of Faure's Requiem in this form, do not hesitate.
The fillers, sensibly placed before the Requiem, combine the popular with the obscure. There are quite delightful performances of the Cantique de Jean Racine and the choral verion of the Pavance.
The rarity on this disc is La Naissance de Venus for soloists, chorus and orchestra. Faure overcame the liability of a terrible text and, especially in the earlier pages, wote some of his very finest music. The work should be much more widely known and has in Yan Pascal Tortelier the best possible advocate. A delightful performance.
All in all, this is essential disc for all lovers of French music.
