Steven Varcoe has the most wonderful voice. Any description won't do it justice: rich, deep, clear might be suitable adjectives, but inadequate ones. His verson of Am Bach im Fruhling (also showcased on Hyerion's sample disk of their Schubert series, "A Voyage of Discovery") is particularly beautiful and moving. Auf der Donau is another outstanding song. As noted above, even the extremely long song which concludes the album (Der Taucher) has drama and beauty and holds your attention throughout. Needless to say, Graham Johnson's accompanyment is perfect.
