AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow
A teacher at William Patterson College throughout the 1980s, bassist Rufus Reid, his trio (which includes pianist Rob Schneiderman and drummer Victor Lewis) and guest tenor Harold Land can be heard on this CD playing at a concert for the student body. With the exception of Oscar Pettiford's "Swinging 'Till the Girls Come Home," all of the songs are somewhat obscure including compositions by Harold Danko, Wayne Shorter, Take 6, Geoff Keezer, Thad Jones and Reid. The pacing is a bit odd, starting off with three straight ballads (six of the ten selections are somewhat introspective) and there are no real crowdpleasers on the date. Land contributed the scalar piece "Short Subject" and shows that his tenor playing has grown through the years. Rufus Reid takes nearly as much solo space as Schneiderman and Land, displaying a beautiful tone and creative ideas. The music is at times a bit dry but rewards repeated listenings.
