Leonard Bernstein, conductor

Lorin Maazel with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Colin Davis with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Paavo Berglund with orchestras in Bournemouth and Helsinki have produced very fine Sibelius symphony cycles. This Bernstein set with greatly improved sonics over its previous incarnations is an excellent bargain and a fine one to have along with one of the others. All of the symphonies are conducted with commitment, fervor and great thought put into phrasing, orchestral balances, and tempos.

The concluding minutes of the Fourth Symphony's finale may disturb those who feel it should end "in tempo;" Sibelius' marking is Allegro with no further change, but Bernstein slows to a tragic, funereal adagio much like a Bruckner slow movement.

There is a lack of bass response in the earliest recordings of the Fifth and Seventh symphonies but not enough to detract from the listening experience of the whole set.

Besides the terrific interpretations of the symphonies there are also fine performances of Luonnotar (with Phyllis Curtin in marvelous voice), Pohjola's Daugther, Valse Triste and The Swan of Tuonela. Zino Francescatti's performance of the Violin Concerto seems rushed and his tempos are often at odds with Bernstein's; the same could be said of the Bruch Concerto No. 1 with Thomas Schippers conducting (the original LP disc mate to the Sibelius). The other fillers in the form of the two Grieg Peer Gynt Suites and Sibelius' Finlandia are not in the same league as the symphony performances.
