Normally our blues maestro Pete Feenstra would be waxing lyrical I am sure on this release, however I like a little traditional blues now and then, something Errol Linton is steeped in. Errol has releases five albums previously, gained plaudits from the likes of Joe Bonamassa (who appeared onstage with Errol and his band in January this year) and championed by Cerys Mattews on her blues show.
His band are top notch, featuring the Specials current drummer Kenrick Rowe, pianist Petar Zivkovic, bassist Lance Rose and guitarist Adam Blake. The album has already had a digital release to get the songs out there, with a CD and vinyl release now scheduled.
‘No Entry Blues’ and ‘Fools For Love’ give the album a flying start. Errol’s harmonica weaves in and out of the guitar. Some seriously good playing by Adam Blake on these songs, and indeed throughout the whole album.
It is not all blues though, as the instrumental ‘Speak Easy’ adds a nice, easy reggae/ska beat, again the guitar playing of Adam Blake is superb. More of that easy on the ear reggae on ‘Howlin’ For My Darlin’, which allows Errol’s vocals to take centre stage.
It is a great listen from start to finish, with some truly astounding playing and the band bounce musically off each other with ease.
If like me, you only occasionally dip your toes into the blues pool then dive on in with this fine album from Errol Linton and his band. The blues tradition is alive and well, and here’s hoping Errol and his band can get back to playing live soon.
