Following the rebirth of the Erato label in 2013, The Erato Story provides a retrospective of the label's landmark recordings from the years between 1952, the year Erato was founded, and 2003, when it ceased operation for ten years. In its first three decades, Erato had a particular focus on French music and French artists. Although Erato diversified over the 50 years covered by this collection, it maintained a distinctive focus on French music and on Baroque repertoire; these emphases are reflected in this collection. Maurice André, born 1933, was a French trumpeter. Three years into his conservatory training, André won the Geneva International Music Competition. He rose to prominence in the 1960s with a series of Baroque music recordings release by Erato. Cellist André Navarra, born in 1911, was a French cellist. Navarra studied at the Toulouse Conservatory, where he won first prize at the age of 13. After World War II, Navarra accepted a professorship at the Conservatoire de Paris. This recording of Haydn concertos for cello, trumpet, and horns highlights both the prowess and artistic grace of both performers.
