Shostakovich wrote music for cinema and drama theater all his life: almost 100 years have passed since the time he created the first soundtrack (even to silent cinema!). From his youth Shostakovich worked as a pianist in cinemas, but from the end of the 1920s he declared himself as an unconventional film composer who offered original solutions to director's problems.

The album presents the suite of one of Shostakovich's first sound films "Golden Mountains: (1931), preludes from the music to the lyric film "Girlfriends: (1935), music for the films "The Gadfly: (1955, Romance from the film became one of the most popular concert encores ") And: Hamlet "(1964). "Hamlet: by Grigory Kozintsev received the prize for "best music", was recognized in Great Britain as the best film version of the tragedy, and was also awarded prestigious international awards: the Venice Film Festival, the 1st All-Union Film Festival, nominated for the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards.

From the music to theatrical performances, the album presents a suite from the Vakhtangov Theater play "Hamlet: (1932, director Nikolai Akimov) and fragments from the music for the performances "The Human Comedy: by Balzac (1934) and "King Lear", the first joint work of Shostakovich and Kozintsev at the Bolshoi Drama Theater of Leningrad on the eve of the war.

Music for films and performances sounds in the interpretations of Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Emin Khachaturyan, Nikolai Rabinovich, Eduard Serov.

The digital edition contains two additional tracks.
