This 1972 performance from Emil Gilels, Eugen Jochum and the Berlin Philharmonic is very strong and successful. Gilels and Jochum take things on the slower side, luxuriating in the rich textures and evocative melodies. Especially striking is the melancholy subject in the Maestoso with the rising minor sixth, presented at different times in the solo part or the strings or the woodwinds, with its brooding nature brought out perfectly here.
Added to the program is a 1976 Gilels recording of the four Ballades for solo piano (Op. 10). Finished by Brahms in 1854 when he was in his early 20s, these works have never struck me as special, but they are chronologically and harmonically linked to the concerto and receive a nice performance here.
Sound quality is OK 1970s sound, although a bit muffled. If you're looking for just one CD of the Brahms 1st concerto, you can buy this one and be done. Recommended.
