Music for an unaccompanied instrument is one of the most intimate forms of performance, showcasing as it does the complex rapport that exists between a single player and their instrument. Every instrument has accrued, over time, a signature repertoire that features the instrument as soloist, alone without collaboration. Although some instruments have vast landscapes of solo music – the piano and violin being prime examples – many instruments (particularly wind instruments) have a limited number of pieces from which to choose when programming unaccompanied works. The bassoon is no exception. This program, Alone, is a widely ranging collection of works for unaccompanied bassoon that includes both “standards” as well as newer, lesser-known works. All together, Scott Pool and the repertoire showcase the instrument’s broad expressive range and capabilities in the solo setting.
Scott Pool is a frequent recitalist across the United States and abroad with numerous solo engagements and appearances at festivals. Recognized as a Moosmann Artist by master bassoon maker, Bernd Moosmann, Pool’s performances have taken him throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia, programming both the standard repertoire and new compositions for the bassoon. An avid proponent of new music, Scott has played an active role in the commissioning of both established and emerging contemporary composers, including Gernot Wolfgang, Miguel del Aguila, Rafael Mevorach, Gene Pritsker, Katherine Hoover, Jenni Brandon and Sunny Knable, among many others. Pool’s festival performances include featured performances at RioWinds in Brazil, the Festival of New American Music in California and numerous appearances at International Double Reed Society conferences. He has served as principal bassoon with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra, Albany Symphony Orchestra and Savannah Symphony Orchestra in Georgia; has performed with the with the Tucson Pops and Tucson Symphony Orchestra in Arizona; with the Las Vegas Philharmonic and Oklahoma City Philharmonic; and with the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra, Victoria Symphony Orchestra and Plano Symphony Orchestra in Texas. An active recording artist, he can be heard on Song of the Redwood-Tree: Bassoon Works of Sunny Knable (MSR Classics), Woodwind Music of Robert Fruehwald, Vol.II (private released), Revelations (EPR), Eastern Discoveries (MSR Classics), Vocalise (Mark Records) and his debut solo CD, Landscapes: Double Reed Music of Daniel Baldwin (Mark Records). His passion for teaching and passing on the knowledge of the bassoon to younger generations is manifest in the many fine accomplishments of students of his private studio. Pool currently serves as the Academy Director of the Talis Festival & Academy in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is an Assistant Professor of Music at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi where he teaches Applied Bassoon and Chamber Music. He is also on the chamber music faculty of the Orfeo International Music Festival in Italy. His primary bassoon teachers have been Carl Rath of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Will Dietz of Tucson, Arizona. For these recordings, Scott Pool plays a Moosmann 222CL bassoon.
