The COSMOS TRIO was founded in 2004 by flutist Katherine Borst Jones, violist Mary E.M. Harris and harpist Jeanne Norton, all three members of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus, to explore music composed for that magical combination of instruments. Inspired by the music of Claude Debussy and Toru Takemitsu, the group initiated a regular commissioning schedule for new music. They have performed on artist series at The Ohio State University, Miami University, Ball State University, Earlham College, Columbus Art Museum and for the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra. They performed their commissioned works on a featured concert in Kansas City at the National Flute Association’s convention in August 2008. They were featured at the International Viola Congress in Cincinnati in June 2010, performing Libby Larsen’s Trio with the composer in attendance. In June of 2014, they performed four of their commissioned pieces at the 41st American Harp Society’s Convention held in New Orleans. Letter from Home was premiered on the Contemporary Music Festival featuring Donald Harris at The Ohio State University.
Katherine Borst Jones has performed at numerous conventions as a soloist and as the conductor of the Ohio State Flute Troupe and convention flute choirs. She received the NFA National Service Award in 2011. Jones is a founding member and co-principal flutist of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus, Ohio. She is also former principal flute and soloist with the Columbus Bach Ensemble, a member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and principal flute of the New Sousa Band, which has toured Japan, China and throughout the United States. Professor of flute at The Ohio State University since 1985, Jones was awarded the 1995 and 2012 Distinguished Teacher Award and the 2008 Scholar Award in the School of Music. She is a visiting professor at the Shenyang Conservatory in China, and was co-founder, teacher and coordinator for the Robert Willoughby Master Classes at the University of New Hampshire for eight years. In 1976 she created the annual High School Flute Workshop program that continues to this day at Ohio State. She has taught at Heidelberg College, Denison University, Emporia State University in Kansas, Oberlin Conservatory, Capital University and at the American Institute for Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. As a member of the National Flute Association, she has been president of the organization twice, has held a wide array of other offices and was a member of the NFA’s delegation to the Soviet Union in 1989. Jones She can be heard on recordings on the CRI, d’Note and Summit labels. Jones studied with Keith Brion, Robert Willoughby, Kyril Magg, Donald E. McGinnis and Julius Baker.
Jeanne Norton has been principal harpist and soloist with the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus since 1979. She has served as harpist for Opera Naples and is substitute principal and second harpist for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. She is also founder and director of Harp Ohio, a performing ensemble for pre-college students. Norton is lecturer in harp and performing artist at The Ohio State University School of Music and instructor of harp at Wittenberg University. She freelances throughout the region. Her CD Paradise also features flutist Katherine Borst Jones. Norton was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Harp Society, and served as President of the Society’s Hetuck Chapter in Columbus, Ohio, where she also served as conference chair for the 1985 Salzedo Centennial conference held there.
Mary E.M. Harris is principal violist of ProMusica Chamber Orchestra in Columbus, Ohio, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra in Indiana and formerly served as principal of the Echternach Festival Orchestra in Luxembourg. Harris currently spends summers at the New Hampshire Music Festival and as a member of the Peter Britt Festival in Jacksonville, Oregon. Currently professor of viola at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, she was a member of the Oxford String Quartet at Miami from 1988 to 2005. A former member of the Dakota String Quartet and I Musici de Montréal, Harris has also served as principal violist of the New American Chamber Orchestra, touring Europe extensively and performing at the Korsholm, Casals, and at other international festivals.
Soprano Lucy Shelton is winner of two Walter W. Naumburg Awards, as both chamber musician and solo recitalist, and has built an international career of dramatic vocalism and brilliant interpretive skills. An esteemed exponent of 20th and 21st century repertory, she has premiered more than 100 works, including song cycles by Elliott Carter, Oliver Knussen, Louis Karchin, and James Yannatos; chamber works by Carter, Joseph Schwantner, Mario Davidovsky, Stephen Albert, Lewis Spratlan, Charles Wuorinen, Gabriella Lena Frank, Bruce Adolphe, Alexander Goehr, Poul Ruders, Anne Le Baron and Thomas Flaherty; orchestral works by Knussen, Albert Schwantner, David Del Tredici, Gerard Grisey, Ezra Laderman, Sally Beamish, Virko Baley and Ned Rorem; and an opera by Robert Zuidam. Her extensive discography is on the Deutsche Grammophon, Koch International, Naxos, Nonesuch, NMC, Bridge, Albany, and Innova labels. A native of California, her primary mentor was Jan De Gaetani. She has taught at the Third Street Settlement School in Manhattan, the Eastman School, the New England Conservatory, the Cleveland Institute, and the Britten-Pears School. She joined the resident artist faculty of the Tanglewood Music Center in 1996. In the fall of 2007, she was appointed to the Manhattan School of Music’s Contemporary Performance Faculty. She is also a member of the Symphony Space All Stars and teaches privately in her New York City studio.
Soprano Christine Shumway Mortine is founder and music director of Columbus Bach Ensemble, a professional baroque orchestra which served central Ohio for six years. Under Christine’s direction, the CBE orchestra, chorus and soloists were nominated for the Greater Columbus Arts Council Artistic Excellence Award in spring 2006. Mortine earned a Bachelor’s of music degree in voice, a Bachelor’s degree in music education and a Master’s degree in music performance in addition to a minor in conducting from Ohio State University. She has worked with conductors Helmuth Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival, Jeffrey Thomas with American Bach Soloists and Robert Shaw. Mortine has served as assistant conductor with Opera Columbus and Columbus Light Opera. As a soprano soloist, she has worked with the Lancaster Festival, Dayton Symphony, Opera Columbus, Early Interval including numerous recitals throughout the states. A former member of the voice faculties of Kenyon College and Denison University, she is a graduate of the Academy for Leadership and Governance Executive Director Fellowship Program.
