Roger Goula has a background in classical and jazz guitar but it was his talent for composition that got him noticed and won him scholarships from the PRS Foundation for New Music and The Alan Hawkshaw Foundation during his time at the NFTS, where he studied for an MA in composition for film.
Roger’s most recent work includes his score for Martin Owen’s feature film, Killers Anonymous (starring Gary Oldman and Jessica Alba); BBC dramas, Killed by My Debt and The Left Behind in 2019; Amazon documentary, Make Us Dream, which explores the career of footballer Steven Gerrard. Roger released the full soundtrack for the documentary later that year.
Having built up an impressive portfolio doing collaborative work as a composer for fringe theatre, short films, and contemporary dance projects, more recently Roger has scored a number of distinctive short films and contributed to notable documentaries such as Best Of Men and Britain In A Day and, last year, the critically acclaimed film Shock Head Soul, for director Simon Pummell. In a Variety review of the film, Roger’s music was described as ‘strikingly original‘.
In 2014, Roger scored the documentary film ‘Next Goal Wins’. Now released on DVD, the film opened to universal critical acclaim and is rated as 100% fresh on rottentomatoes.com. Since then, Roger has completed the scores for Simon Pummell’s latest project, sci-fi thriller Identicals; Tiger House, a thriller for director Tom Daley; and Roger collaborated with Harry Escott on the score for The Frankenstein Chronicles starring Sean Bean for ITV.
Roger’s commissions have included feature film Jet Trash for director Charles Belleville, the feature documentary Versus: The Life And Films Of Ken Loach, and two different films about the 2011 police shooting of Mark Duggan; Lawful Killing, a BBC1 docu-drama, and The Hard Stop, an acclaimed feature documentary directed by George Amponsah.
Most recently, Roger scored the feature Access All Areas for director Bryn Higgins, the feature documentary Diana: 7 Days for BBC1, Against The Law, a drama documentary concerning the legalisation of homosexuality in the UK starring Daniel Mays, and the final episodes of Inspector George Gently for BBC1.
In November 2016, Roger released his first solo album, Overview Effect, for new imprint Cognitive Shift. The album has received excellent reviews and been played on 6Music and Radio 3, among other stations.
As well as scoring the second series of The Frankenstein Chronicles (starring Sean Bean), Roger also scored Mother’s Day, a 2019 docudrama feature length for BBC Two, based on the Warrington IRA bombing in 1993.
