One of the coolest, grooviest albums ever from Vernon Burch – an overlooked 70s soul genius who worked with countless others in the decade, and cut a handful of gems on his own! The set may well be Vernon's best, as it's got this really wonderful approach that mixes funky elements, jazzy vibes, and lots of other warm touches – more than enough to put the record in the same great space as 70s classics by artists like Leon Ware or Ronnie McNeir! Vernon's vocals are wonderful – soaring, but laidback too – and the arrangements have some great jazzy touches on keyboards and guitar, almost in a way that echoes the best modes of Stevie Wonder. A definite gem from the rare groove generation.
Guitarist and singer Vernon Darrell Burch was born in 1957 and from a very young age his musical talent was recognized. By the age of 13 he was already playing alongside the Delfonics where he spent two years backing them on guitar.
VERNON BURCH later joined a Chicago soul group by the name of The 5 Stairsteps, best known for their 1970 summer hit O-o-h Child which climbed all the way to #8 on the Billboard Pop chart. After his time spent with the Stairsteps, Vernon Burch went on to join The Bar-Kays where he would stay for four years replacing Michael Toles following the departure of Toles and original Bar-Kays member Ben Cauly when both permanently joined Isaac Hayes’ backing band having previously played on his hit Shaft soundtrack.
In 1975 Vernon Burch signed to United Artist Records and released his debut album I’ll Be Your Sunshine. In 1977 Burch signed with Columbia where he would release WHEN I GET BACK HOME now available on BBR! Produced by VERNON BURCH with the help of former Gamble & Huff Productions staff member, Gene Dozier, WHEN I GET BACK HOME also feature piano mastery from the legendary Greg Phillanganes and the talented Joe Blocker on drums.
