Allumé ? Oui Sun Ra était sans doute un véritable allumé. Difficile de trouver vocable plus adéquate pour définir cet hallucinant créateur-agitateur qui traversa le ciel jazz comme une comète incontrôlable. À la tête de son Arkestra, Herman Poole Blount alias Sun Ra a enregistré plus de deux cents albums, le plus souvent sur son label Saturn depuis la fin des années 50. Vénéré (ou détesté) pour ses compositions à tiroirs et ses performances phénoménales autant que pour la bizarroïde philosophie cosmique qu'il prêchait, le pianiste d’Alabama fut un bruitiste qui influencera de nombreux acteurs de la scène expérimentale des années 70 à nos jours. Un créateur à part que ce Sun Ra répétant inlassablement : « Certaines personnes sont contrôlées par des forces venues d’autres planètes. J’en fais partie, donc je ne suis pas réellement libre ». Cette excellente compilation intitulée Marshall Allen presents Sun Ra And His Arkestra: In The Orbit Of Ra paru sur le non moins excellent label Strut est la parfaite porte d'entrée au royaume de ce Ra. Tous ses essentiels hommes de main sont là (Marshall Allen, Michael Ray, Knoel Scott et Danny Ray Thompson) pour un vaste périple à bord de l'Arkestra du début des années 60 jusqu'à celui des années 80, du blues céleste de Spontaneous Simplicity et Plutonian Nights à l'urgence de Rocket Number Nine Take Off For Planet Venus et Dance Of The Cosmo-Aliens.
