Rising pop star FLETCHER surprised fans today by dropping her anticipated new EP, The S(ex) Tapes a week early. Alongside her bold collection of songs, FLETCHER also shared a sultry new video for the hypnotic “Shh…Don’t Say It.”
The visual was filmed by FLETCHER’s ex, Shannon Beveridge, during their time together in quarantine. Beveridge, a YouTube star, actress, photographer, and award-winning LGBTQ+ advocate collaborated with FLETCHER on all visuals for The S(ex) Tapes, including “Bitter (with Kito).” The single, which quickly garnered over 30 million global streams, marks the artist’s highest-charting single to-date on iTunes. FLETCHER has also previously shared tracks “If I Hated You” and “The One.”
The seven-track EP was executive produced by FLETCHER’s frequent collaborator Malay (Lorde, Frank Ocean), and found the artist working with an all-star line-up of songwriters, including Caroline Ailin and Emily Warren (Dua Lipa), Mozella (Miley Cyrus, Rihanna), and Jennifer Decilveo (Melanie Martinez), among others. The EP, according to a statement, “intimately documented [FLETCHER’s] personal journey over the last few years, including the tension between being in love and learning to stand on her own for the first time.”
In a recent interview with Flaunt, FLETCHER described The S(ex) Tapes as “pretty risqué but totally honest and vulnerable.” She added, “the s__t we go through in life isn’t black-and-white, things aren’t perfect. I don’t have my s__t figured out at all. I’m f__king emotional, a hot mess train express at all times. I don’t know that I’ve been as honest as I am right now, especially because it’s something that I’m currently going through and is currently happening.”
In an interview with Clash, FLETCHER shared, “I wanted this EP to just be a really f__king honest representation of what it is like to love somebody, have such a connection, but also have all these questions.”
The S(ex) Tapes follows the artist’s acclaimed 2019 EP, you ruined new york city for me, which included her breakthrough hit, “Undrunk.” The song not only topped Spotify’s Viral Chart but also secured FLETCHER a nomination for iHeartRadio’s Best New Pop Artist. Earlier this year, she gained attention for her cover of Taylor Swift’s “Lover” with Niall Horan for a Spotify Singles session. The duet, which Swift proclaimed to be “stunning,” turned the introspective country-folk song into a power-ballad.
