The life dates of Christoph Demantius (1567-1643) correspond exactly to those of Claudio Monteverdi, but the new low-voiced or even soloist forms of church music, such as those from Italy to Germany, were a thorn in his side. For him, a motet had to be 'full of voices' and 'adorned with peculiar artificial joints'. In terms of composition, his works are therefore more rooted in the succession of Lasso. With their recording, Georg Grün and the Saarbrücken Chamber Choir prove that Demantius is nevertheless a highly interesting composer, despite all the conservatism.
