PROXIMITY
( Soundtrack - Original Songs by Radio Wolf & Parallels )

Proximity will be released internationally in May 2020. It was written and directed by Emmy award-winning VFX Artist, Eric Demeusy (HBO’s Game Of Thrones. Netflix’s Stranger Things, Disney’s Tron: Legacy).

It’s the story of a young scientist working for NASA JPL who is abducted by extraterrestrials. People don’t believe him so he becomes obsessed with finding proof which leads him on a wondrous journey of discovery.

SONGS
Electronic music artists Radio Wolf and Parallels, teamed up to write, perform and produce seven original songs for the film. Inspired by the film’s romantic, yet dangerous, otherworldly feel, the songs combine echoes of 80s synth-pop, uncanny rock guitar, lush vocals and ‘out-there’ experimental electronic sound effects.

Final mixing of songs into the film was done by composer Jermaine Stegall at Skywalker Sound located in George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch in California.

CREATIVE PROCESS
Oliver first got a call from the film’s director, asking if he was interested in creating music for it. The director had heard songs and instrumentals featured on Oliver’s Radio Wolf website and had been playing them during the production of the film. After sharing the theme of the film over the phone, the director sent Oliver a private link to a working trailer.

Sensing the romantic, celestial, ‘voice’ of the film, Oliver imagined a soundtrack of songs that explored this ‘voice’ and its range of themes: space, time, nature, love, danger and wonder. He conjured up a retrofuturistic soundcape that combined echos of 80s romantic synth-pop with a spiritual, sonic dimension inspired by the story. Liking this, the director sent him the full script and a rough cut.

Oliver reached out to synth-pop artist Holly Dodson aka Parallels, whose voice and musical talent he admired and who he’d previously collaborated and toured with. After studying the script together, they went on to create, perform and produce seven songs for the film.

The new team’s creative process started out with a synth based instrumental that Oliver had composed to anchor a musical ’feel’ for the film. This became the song “Lost Angel”. Holly and he then crafted lyrics to the melody carefully staying true to the spirit of the story. This song set the tone and design approach for the whole project.

Each song was sonically and lyrically built to fit the overall story, characters, themes and visual mood of the film, and often ‘scored to picture’. Tempo, arrangement and sound design/cues were methodically crafted to the edited scenes.

Holly’s vocal delivery, Oliver’s guitar inflections and live drumming by Holly’s brother Nick (from Parallels) added a natural, human dimension to the more emotionally haunting, otherworldly resonance of the synth created sonics.

The team also invested in more daring, lateral sonic explorations ‘into the unknown’ to craft unique sounds: high bass notes, big guitar reverbs, time effects and bold post-audio manipulation to heighten the visual dynamics in the film. Electronic sound effects were added to augment key sequences in the film: radio/sonar noises, motorcycle revs, space sonics created by guitar, reverse effects, vocoder vocals and electronic echoes. Throughout the entire process, the team worked in close collaboration with the director, sending him demos regularly.
