Story-telling, lyrical guitar artistry from J.H. Guraj, an enigmatic project by Italian artist Dominique Vaccaro, surely resonating with Sir Richard Bishop, Ben Chasny and Loren Connors styles
Detectably inflected with a smoky Middle Eastern accent, Vaccaro’s playing on ‘Introspection / Migration’ inhabits his J.H. Guraj character with a firelick spirit and soulful wisdom that flows between American delta and North African blues and the guitar’s spiritual homelands. It is a music that conjures imagery of rocky, sunbeaten landscapes familiar to those regions, stringing a sound that pays homage to his name - taken from an Albanian sage picker - and feels to reach back thru the ages and channel the migrating sounds that once criss-crossed the mediterranean beyond his home in Calabria, southern Italy.
Told in 10 vignette-like parts, ‘Introspection / Migration’ nimbly connoting vivid imagery that will differ from mind’s eye to mind’s eye, but surely makes us think of shebeens scattered with hookahs, getting lost in labyrinthine bazaars and slowly sailing down overgrown bayous in its geometric weaving of figures and richly layered psychedelia.
