16th/17th century works by Févin, Blondeau, Gardane, Gombert, Costeley, Megnier, Cellier, Racquet, Sweelinck, Scronx, d’Anglebert, Champion, L. Couperin, Gigault, Lebègue, and ‘anon’.
Terence Charlston is one of the leading early-music specialists in Europe both as soloist and ensemble player. Here he introduces a unique instrument: a clavichord built to plans and specifications published by Marin Mersenne in his treatise Harmonie Universelle (c.1636).
This is more important as not one original French clavichord survives. The varied and interesting program takes works of the 16th and 17th centuries – all French except for one piece – and demonstrates the now rarely heard sound-world of the instrument which was so familiar to the composers of the day.
