Jazz pianist and composer Bert Seager teaches creative musicians an in-depth approach to the fundamentals of harmony, rhythm, and improvisation. His systematic and flexible pedagogy, teaching the mastery of musical vocabulary and styles, never loses sight of the bigger picture: the development of each student’s personal aesthetic and professional direction.
Seager’s compositions, improvisations and teaching reflect both an inward- and outward-looking view of life and music. His professional and personal evolution, open mind, and generous nature assist him in guiding aspiring musicians toward their goal of making a life in music.
His seventeen compact discs have won him unanimous critical acclaim from The New York Times, Keyboard magazine, The Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe, and many other publications.
Seager has toured extensively in the United States and internationally, including twelve tours to Japan. He has performed and recorded with Joe Lovano, Tim Hagans, George Garzone, Bob Moses, Joe Hunt, Richie Barshay, and Kazumi Ikenaga. He has also performed in ensembles on stage with George Mraz, Miroslav Vitous, Mick Goodrick, Tom Harrell, Ben Street, John McNeil, Gary Chaffee, Oscar Stagnaro, Eva Ayllon, and Jorge Roeder.
For the past two years, Seager has been selected for a residency at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Seager has been a recipient of a National Endowment of the Arts grant for jazz.
Undergraduate studies, Haverford College. M.M, New England Conservatory. Studies at New England Conservatory with Fred Hersch, Tom McKinley, Jaki Byard, and Charlie Banacos. Recordings on Invisible Music, Buzz, Accurate, Dental, Bellaphon, and Antilles.
