The Amsterdam Brass Quintet - Experimental Brass (2020)

Experimental Brass is an album with brass quintet repertoire that has rarely or never been recorded. In the run-up to the recordings of Experimental Brass, the Amsterdam Brass Quintet toured Belgium with the renowned English euphonium player David Thornton. In the following period the quintet came into contact with the Dutch trombone virtuoso Ilja Reijngoud. Thornton contributed three 21st century British composers: Lucy Pankhurst, Peter Meechan and Simon Dobson. Reijngoud wrote the composition Flow for this CD, for trombone and brass quintet. In addition, the Dutch composer Leonard Evers and the horn player of the ABQ Misha Sporck have been asked to write a new work for this album. Consortant Svit by 20th century Swedish composer Christer Danielsson can be heard on the album in her alternative and rare brass quintet arrangement. As a result, Experimental Brass contains a mixture of styles that are adventurous and progressive, while the ABQ does not lose the familiar and beautiful sound of the brass quintet.
