Jrpjej is the first actually produced project of Ored Recordings.
Usually we find a musician in an expedition, record an album, and then take the performer to festivals as a showcase of original traditional music. Our goal here is to minimize label’s influence on an informant. We do not interfere with creative process and try to be guides, not curators. But Jrpjej is a different new experience and even a challenge.
The striking difference from the usual unbiased ethnography is the fact that Timur Kodzokov, one of Jrpjej founders, is also a half of Ored Recordings. No documentarian approach or detachment here.
Just like Timur, other members of Jrpjej took up folklore rather against the circumstances. They all grew up listening to Western rock, pop, or experimental music. Although in the last few years all of them, one way or another, immersed in Circassian tradition.
Turns out that Jrpjej is the music of Circassians who rediscovered their native music. The band's sound is based on these paradoxes and external inconsistencies: cultural outsiders play root music; old songs for modern reality; individual sound within the musical tradition.
We called it post-traditional music. This is not an experiment, not a new tradition, but a personal reading of Circassian songs and melodies by the band members and the label.
On the debut album “Qorror” you will find healing, wedding and historical songs. In variations by Jrpjej you can hear drone, hip-hop, and dance electronics elements. It wasn’t made on purpose: these elements already exist in "old" songs. Torn from the original rites, they eventually have found a new context. “Qorror " is ritual music for festivals, raves, galleries, feasts and any other occasion.
