LaliBoi (meaning ‘rural boy’ in isiXhosa), born Siphosenkosi Nkodlwane is a South African lyricist; guitarist and trumpeter that fused his rural Xhosa roots with streetwise township flavour to create one of the most exciting South African Hip-Hop releases of recent years, his debut album Siyangaphi. Laliboi is a multi-talented vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, who in collaboration with renowned producer Spoek Mathambo, has created a unique and vital blend of Hip-Hop, jazz and traditional South African tribal music. LaliBoi’s Siyangaphi album colourfully expresses all the things that make South African contemporary music so exciting right now, authentic cultural richness and relevance while keeping an eye on innovation and the future.

A highly skilled and technical MC, LaliBoi’s bouncy raps launch you into the full beauty of the Xhosa language, whether as a first time hearer or language connoisseur, you are sure to adore his highly musical, vocal approach. As well as playing guitar and trumpet, LaliBoi uses his lyrics and voice as one more instrument on Mathambo’s diverse array of beats.

Laliboi first burst onto the music scene as trumpeter, forming the band Impande Core which consisted of an array of creatives, cultural activists and a knack for social justice sought after through the making of music. Soon after the disintegration of Impande Core, Radio 123 was formed by LaliBoi and Smash, (also a former band member of Impande Core) where the ‘Mandela Pop’ genre was founded. LaliBoi speaks enthusiastically about their sound, drawing on the intricacies of township life and thoroughly emphasizing the magnitude of always staying hopeful, which he believes former South African president Nelson Mandela stood for, and therefore channelled that sense of optimism in the construction of Radio 123’s music.

Siphosenkosi has shared the stage and performed with Nick Zinner, Sibot, Gruff Rhys, David Albarn from The Gorillas and had a cameo appearance on Drake’s ‘One Dance’ music video. He has also worked with Sho Madjozi, Moonchild, Ghetts and Muzi. He was part of the revived version of the 50’s South African band called The Woody Wood Packers with Bra Boy (surviving member) under the legendary late trumpeter Johnny Mekoa’s Jazz Orchestra.
