Spur of the Moment is back with its much-anticipated third album release, Urban Renewal. Wayne Bruce, Kenny
Allen and Kevin Prince have once again brought their personal style of urban jazz to music lovers everywhere with
Another amazing 12 tracks disc featuring smooth jazz pioneer Kim Waters, Bridgette Bryant and award winning
Producers Chris “Big Dog” Davis and John Stoddart. The band, founded in 1989 by Wayne Bruce, has enjoyed local
celebrity throughout the Mid-Atlantic region ever since, and is now poised to take share their sound and experience
with the rest of the world. Their first CD released in 1995, SpurAddict, was a local radio favorite spawning two top
five singles; the Janet Jackson cover Anytime, Anyplace and I Wanna Thank You at Washington, DC’s premier
adult station, WHUR. While the second disc, Out of the Shadows produced another number one single in In My
Corner in 2000.
Urban Renewal finally gives fans what they've been wanting for years. This newest release comes nearly six years after their last. When asked about the extended period, Kenny says, Urban Renewal is the best work SOTM has ever done. The reason it's taken so long is because the band went through some personnel changes as all bands do, and we had to figure out a direction that was good and comfortable for us. Wayne adds, for three years we were on the road with Will Downing and Maysa. Meanwhile, Big Dog, Kenny and I produced Streetwise for Kim Waters. Furthermore, Big Dog and I co-produced songs for Maysa’s current CD, Sweet Classic Soul. So it was hard to get our own music together.
Urban Renewal is filled with something for everyone who likes a mix of urban jazz and smooth jazz. The danceable
Steps to the Capital has a classic groove suitable for DC hand dancers, Chicago steppers and boppers from coast
to coast. Just For You, featuring vocals by Bridgette Bryant, is an infectious track that inspires listeners singing
along, while bobbing their heads before they even know all the lyrics. Meanwhile, the first single for smooth jazz
radio, Food for the Dog, is the perfect smooth jazz track with a piano feature that is both funky yet elegant with a
touch of flute as icing on the cake. Interestingly, Kenny explains how that song came about. Food For The Dog came out of nowhere, Allen explains. It was supposed to be a musical interlude. I actually put the groove together intending to give it to Gerald Albright, but once Big Dog got his hands on it, it became a song for the Spur album. We gave it to him and let him feast, hence the title, Food For The Dog.
Keyboardist, Kenny Allen, shows off his vocal chops on the ballad Candle Light that the band feels is an Urban AC
Smash. Another key track on the album is the bands version of Steve Perry's Foolish Heart. This track is getting
rave reviews within the smooth jazz music community. The group reconstructed this mellow offering with a standout
piano lead that finishes with a fresh lift. The title track, Urban Renewal is a melodic, mid-tempo tune perfect for
that peaceful ride on a hot summer day or a cool autumn night. Rounding out Urban Renewal are You and Me,
We Can Get Together, I Will Be There For You, and Let It Flow, Roll Credits and Spur’s interpretation of Rain on
Me, by R&B singer, Ashanti. The extremely seasoned businessmen, musicians, songwriters and producers have written and performed together as a unit in addition to performing as a backing band for the likes of Will Downing, Al
Jarreau, Patty Austin, Glenn Jones, Phil Perry, Maysa, Miki Howard, Christopher Williams, Walter Beasley, Angela
Bofill, Gerald Albright and George Benson, to name just a few. On occasion, the band has performed privately for
the greatest basketball player ever, Michael Jordan, whom they consider a fan.
As composers, lyricists, arrangers, musicians and vocalists, Spur of the Moment is a force in today's music world.
Urban Renewal is a 12 song set with everything you need to have a good time with friends or that special someone.
