About the Movie
Set during the Civil War, Free State of Jones tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War. Starring Academy Award® winner Matthew McConaughey along with Golden Globe® winner Kerri Russell, Free State of Jones opens in theaters nationwide on June 24.
About the Music
Nicholas Britell is an award-winning composer, pianist, and producer with Vogue Magazine calling him "one of the most talented young artists at work. Britell is part of an emerging generation of composers and artists who draw from an eclectic range of influences. His work is inspired by Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, Philip Glass, and Zbigniew Preisner as well as by producers Quincy Jones and Dr. Dre. His music was featured in director Steve McQueen's Oscar®-winning film 12 Years A Slave, for which he composed and arranged the on-camera music including the featured violin performances, spiritual songs, work songs, and dances. His work on 12 Years a Slave was widely acclaimed, including being recognized by Variety, which named the 12 Years a Slave soundtrack among its "Top 10" of 2013. Britell also wrote the score for the Academy Award®-winning film The Big Short as well as Natalie Portman's directorial-debut film, A Tale of Love and Darkness.
