This extremely original work, for a capela choir and reciters, was inspired by the famous fresco "Totentanz" (The Dance of Death) from the Church of St. Mary. In this mythology, each living being and each death form a dancing couple, the living being finally carried away by death. Distler’s work is composed of 13 epigrams, sung by the a capela choir, interspersed with dialogues between the “dancer” (the living being) and death. The dancers are the Emperor, the Priest, the Noble, the Doctor, the Merchant, the Soldier, the Sailor, the Hermit, the Dresser, the Girl, the Old Man and, of course, Death. The final epigram concludes with this universal message: "The soul, because it was born eternal, does not find rest in temporal things. How strange that a human being can love this world so much and that he can at the same time give himself so much to transient things. "
