Dhidalah - Threshold (2019)

Dhidalah - Threshold (2019)

BAND/ARTIST: Dhidalah

To dive into the realm of psychedelic rock, and I mean really dive, is to find yourself in a world where there are virtually no rules whatsoever as we’re taken through a musical kaleidoscope where it feels anything can happen if you just will it. Space rock and even krautrock, in particular, can lead to some of the craziest concoctions that the world of rock has to offer, and truly anything is on the table if you were to bring them together. While I don’t go too deep into such a scenario, it was with Dhidalah’s debut EP of “No Water” that I got my first proper taste of what can happen with such an idea, and it’s here with their first full-length that it’s expanded upon beautifully.

While it was their debut that brought so much to the table when it came to outright psychedelia, it’s with the sheer entirety of “Threshold” that we can see Dhidalah expand their sound greatly to become much more than what was already a whole hell of a lot as what we got with “No Water”. Here, we see the introduction of what can easily be called doom elements into this mix while Dhidalah puts more of an emphasis on the krautrock than the space rock here as “Threshold” feels way more enchanting in just about every single aspect. It all comes together spectacularly such that it wouldn’t be far off to call this some of the most exquisite examples of psychedelia that I’ve seen in months, and it’s incredibly engrossing right from the beginning as you can feel the talent seeping through every single note and so much quality to be hand around every corner that does not disappoint in any capacity whatsoever, but, rather, excels beyond the competition in such a way that is no less than scrumptious to listen to. Dhidalah holds nothing back whatsoever as the four tracks of this stupendous work progress like cosmic titans and gives us plenty of insight into what this Japanese act is capable of which is no less than some truly astonishing works of rock that throngs of bands could only wish they could produce in such massively entertaining heaps as consistently as what’s on display here. To dive into what’s always on display here is to find yourself blissfully lost in a world of near-infinite colors that just keep on giving one delight after another in each and every track, and by the end there’s no denying that what’s brought forth for “Threshold” is nothing short of masterful for anything in the wide realm of psychedelic rock.

There have been and will always be loads of acts in this style as it’s constantly ripe for new talent and excellence from all around the world, and it’s finally from Japan that we have a modern entry that’s as stunning as they are talented in the form of Dhidalah who’ve proven that they are far from a one-trick album band. Should there be any one thing that’s to glean from this album it’s that “Threshold” is, surely, just the beginning for this tremendous act and proves that Dhidalah is something that we absolutely must keep our eyes on for any future brilliance that is sure to come if just given time.
