Piano pieces occupy an important place among the preserved works of Viktor Ullmann, in addition to some operas, orchestral works, chamber music and cycles of melodies. While most genres were uniformly represented during the decades of his artistic career, piano pieces appeared for the first time relatively late (apart from the Schönberg Variations), but followed quickly between 1936 and 1944. All these pieces were composed during critical periods in his personal and artistic life.
