Volume1 in a new series of recordings of the lute music of Francesco Canova da Milano for BGS records. In t16th century Italy, the musician and theorist Gioseffo Zarlino said that composers wrote counterpoint in the same way that poems, orations and paintings were made. With this new Nigel North recording the stage is set for an hour of music that speaks to the hearts and minds of the listeners. Fantasies and Ricercars composed by the greatest lutenist of the time, Francesco da Milano, better known in his time as il Divino.

Canta bene :))
This was recorded in 2012 before his heart attack.
Did he already retire ?
Planned Vol. 3 of Francesco (Italian call him so but American call him da Milano that means from Milan, family name is Canova) isn't yet released (Vol. 2 was recorded in 2014).
Many thanks for Nigel's Francesco Vol. 1 :)

No totally satisfying Francesco da Milano CD is still available. The best ever so far will be released by 15th June or so. In the meantime, only Hopkinson Smith has given us a tolerable da Milano. Paul O'Dette is very good indeed but all his recordings are miked in an over-wet reverberation (mention has to be done of his terrible Dall'Aquila CD, which should have never been commercially released), hiding any possible unpolished passages. North in general loses tempo when a more complicated moment appears (quick bars), O'Dette is boring in the slow passages... and the rest, sincerely, have no level (except for Hoppy). So, stay tuned; in June, a revelatory, fully gut-strung da Milano played on 3 different instruments arrives in a de-luxe packaging from certain beautiful early music label located in the mountains of a very sunny country (ruled by the most awful Governement of the first world).
