'Eighteen' is the sixth studio album by the Walldorf, Germany-based SAP Big Band. Like the band's previous productions, it was created under the direction of Thomas Siffling. While the prestigious trumpet player from Mannheim is already in his fourteenth year of leading the band, his enthusiasm is still going strong.
Siffling's much-quoted aspiration of leading the band to being the 'best and most fascinating amateur big band in the Rhine-Neckar-Region' manifests itself in the highly professional standards he applies where they matter.
For one thing, the arrangements do make a difference. They were either written for professional musicians or exclusively for the SAP Big Band. There is a lot of passion in the way the band plays pieces such as Teach Me Tonight (DePaul/Nestico), La Fiesta (Corea/Mossman), or Anticipation (Siffling/Perschke). Add a lot of attention to detail - this is the band leaders's job - and what you get is rather authentic renditions that make the classical big band jazz on this album come across in an attractive and modern fashion. Recording engineer Markus Born did a spot-on job in capturing the powerful big band sound. You can play it on those big speakers in your lounge or put it on the iPod in your pocket - you will always recognize the brilliant, energetic nature of this music.
Picking up and opening the high-quality CD case is a real pleasure, and there is a surprise in store. In the absence of fancy footage or lengthy liner notes, a pensive poem tells us that this production celebrates the bands eighteenth anniversary.
