At the risk of seeming to damn the Crookes with faint praise by focusing on their fealty to an earlier era, the young British band brings the echoes of late-‘80s U.K. guitar pop into the 21st century, sounding curiously fresh in the process. Chasing After Ghosts will remind listeners with long memories of the kind of perky, melodic tunes that took flight in the hands of such bands as the Mighty Lemon Drops, the Housemartins, and the Woodentops, although the Crookes may not have even been born when the aforementioned artists started making music. The Sheffield lads sound strikingly self-assured and fully formed for a band making its full-length debut, which was preceded by the equally impressive EP Dreams of Another Day. Having already gained the attention and admiration of their elders, including Richard Hawley and Jarvis Cocker, the Crookes seem to have perfected their approach at an early stage of the game. Whether they're slowing things down and drawing them out to achieve the maximum amount of drama on "Youth," knocking out a jaunty feel fortified by blissful "ba-ba" backing vocals and an early-Smiths bounce on "Bloodshot Days," or updating an even earlier era of Brit-pop with "Carnabetian Charms," a modern-day take on the sort of dandy detailed by the Kinks on "Dedicated Follower of Fashion," the Crookes consistently hit the nail on the head. When a band shows this much skill so early on, the biggest worry is that it'll peak too early, but still, there are far less enviable situations for a young act to find itself in.
