Roger Kellaway - Stride! (1967/2020)

The gimmick of this fairly obscure LP by pianist Roger Kellaway is that the virtuosic player strides on many of the pieces. But rather than being a high-quality swing date, Kellaway also plays some current pop tunes (including "Sunny," "It's Lovely Up Here" from On a Clear Day, and "Cabaret"), plus a few vintage tunes and Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way." The use of strings and a brass section, along with bassist Red Mitchell and drummer John Guerin, weighs down the set, and Kellaway obviously does not take himself very seriously on this so-so effort, which has more than its share of throwaway performances.
