Propelled by his worldwide smash “Riptide”, Vance Joy has already experienced the kind of success many artists spend entire careers chasing. That song, from the Melbourne singer/songwriter’s debut EP, God Loves You When You’re Dancing, has sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide and is climbing up the US charts.

The lyrical and literate record has already produced winning singles like Mess Is Mine, Riptide and new track First Time before the full cut has even been released. James Keogh draws inspiration for his imagery-rich composition from his musical idols, favourite literature and films. It’s an extension of last year’s EP, but more refined, enhanced and with greater depth of themes and passions. Vance has claimed to piece the songs together from an amalgamation of pop culture, underpinned by quotes from his family and experiences on the road to infuse a universally resonant and signature serenade. Where his past sounds touch on unrestrained affection, the debut album resounds in romanticism, pining for the humble dreams of love, life and ultimate fulfilment.

The 13 tracks have been a long time coming, but Vance certainly cuts deepest in his first album. With the foundation of his talented drummer, the singer’s guitar and ukulele skills add a dimension to the lyrical poetics which pull at the heartstrings. With his single Mess Is Mine released in July, Vance teased listeners with another catchy and upbeat croon, yet his most direct love song emphasises the endearing mess of life in ‘This still makes sense to me / Your mess is mine’. Written in 2007, Georgia devotes its heart to imagination in a song which started solely with a unique guitar riff. This song provides a fresh change in the second half of the album in its intimate and delicate melody, contrasting with the less polished harmonies of the first, pop-driven opening songs. The closing My Kind Of Man illustrates Keogh’s expressive depth, with the subtly electronic background highlighting the raw beauty in an emphatic finish.

On the surface, the album may sound like one repetitive love song. Though on a closer listen, the intricacies give insight and meaning to a score of finding your place in the world. (Hannah Lally, Rip It Up)
