Complete performances of Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet are increasingly supplanting the three suites as the most available version of the work, and the ballet is well served by this 2016 release from Vasily Petrenko and the Oslo Philharmonic on the LAWO label. Presented on two CDs, and engineered with exceptionally clear reproduction, the score is lovingly rendered with precise details, vibrant sonorities, and crisply accented rhythms that leave little doubt about what's indicated on the page. Petrenko's meticulous interpretation may remind some listeners of another great recording, André Previn's refined offering on EMI with the London Symphony Orchestra, which was released to critical acclaim in 1973. Both conductors find a reasonable balance between Prokofiev's sharp-edged sardonic side and his warmer expressions, and the witty dances and violent fight music are complemented by the lush beauty of the love scenes. However, Petrenko has a clear advantage with the first-rate digital audio, which is cleaner and more spacious than the sound of Previn's analog recording. This Romeo and Juliet is a worthwhile addition to the catalog, and Petrenko's exceptional work with the Oslo Philharmonic promises great things to come from their partnership. ~ Blair Sanderson
