Nightmares on Wax - Smokers Delight (Digital Deluxe) (2020)

Nightmares On Wax rejig the seminal coffee table trip hop classic for 2020 smokers, jokers and corona dodgers.

Officially one of my dad’s favourite albums, and coincidentally a ubiquitous presence in this scribe’s teenage soundtrack, ’Smokers Delight’ will hold myriad personal connections for so, so many listeners of an age (over 30s?) to the point of transcending cliche and simply defining a sound in its own right. That is to say it’s still bubbling over with mellow charm, basked in the halcyon glow of the ‘90s that only seems further away but more attractive now than ever.

Those familiar with the record’s ebbing flow will notice (maybe get irked by) the inclusion of some extra tracks that fluff out that set, which was pretty much bob-on anyway and now contains 20 not 16 tracks, but that’s the nature of ‘Digital Deluxe’ 25th anniversary edition things isn’t it. However, even if you’ve graduated from buckets of tack to imported IG kush, the warm and nostalgic throwback of ’Smokers Delight’ is a reliably old skool chong.
