This album is about Taketomi Island ‒ a jewel in a blue, coral ocean. This flat island emerged by the rise of a coral reef in which leaves the old Okinawa landscape with flat houses with red roof tiles, rock fences of corals, and white sandy roads made by crashed corals. You will have the deepest impression to be truly in Okinawa when you visit here, more so than anywhere else. Not only its nature landscape, Taketomi is known for its preserved traditional culture of Yaeyama region through folk songs, ancient tunes, arts, oral folklore and local habits.
Blending such island’s nature sound of the ocean, the trees, and the land with our traditional music composes this album “The Sound of Taketomi Island ‒ Okinawa”. It successfully packaged the presence of Taketomi as it should be by deeply sinking in the fields to communicate with the surrounding air through microphones that are literally the ability of Mick to capture the activities of the nature into the sound. The island’s nature joins to the voice of Shinobu Maki, locally-born Shimauta artist in a gentle harmony, and invites the heart of listeners to this southern island.
The recording sessions took place in the living room of a local home or in a vacant, old traditional house. The air of vibrating voices, three-strings and drums with the sense of subtropical humidity and flavor of oceanic salt is stored with precision in 192kHz/24bit quality. The field recording in the atmosphere along the slow and relaxed flow of time is so powerful that it beautifully represents the feel being there dimensionally. The field recordings were taken in the early morning or late in the night when the ferries and the high-speed commuter boats ceased operating. Slow waves gently arriving on the beach, bubbling ocean water near the shoreline, and the wind passing through the trees illustrate our island surrounded by the coral reef. Being still, holding my breath under the countless stars above, articulating my own five senses in the recording spot, I felt as if Taketomi Island itself was talking to us. This album in high-res fully reveals the fascinating character of the island.

About Taketomi Island:
Taketomi belongs to the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa prefecture, and it is 6km from the centric Ishigaki Island, about 15 minutes by high-speed commuter. Its population is 365 as of July 2016.
The whole island is a part of Iriomote National Park claiming “the island of culture and views nurtured by the nature”. Coral reefs all around, in its west side in particular expands the Lake Sekiseisho, country’s largest coral reef. In 1986, the Taketomi Island Charter was established by the citizens to enforce five principles of “no selling, no staining, no disturbing, no damaging, and reviving” that contributed preserving the island’s nature and the landscape. Their major business is sightseeing
