Amisha's Sitar - Dawn to Night (2020)

Amisha's Sitar - Dawn to Night (2020)

BAND/ARTIST: Amisha's Sitar

I am a Sitar player and composer from London where I have been learning the Sitar since the age of 12.

My first enthusiasm for music started in primary school when listening to the music played by the teacher, I would swift my pony tail side to side and tap my feet along to the beat of the music. I would imagine moving images whilst listening to the music. In addition, I enjoyed composing melodies and rhythms as well as performing the material made both solo and in groups.

Secondary school was where I opted and started to learn Sitar. Significant sounds materialized when I heard the Sitar and I am still really pleased to this day to have chosen the Sitar as an instrument. I would practice melodies and scales on the sitar every day after school in the evenings and listen to Sitar instrumental music. I was featured in the Harrow Observer for a performance at multicultural day which celebrated diversity music in the school’s hall.

My passion for music drove me on to study BMus(Hons) Music Performance and Music Management at the London College of Music. I began to create music with Sitar in original songs and instrumental tracks in the genres of Pop, Folk, Rock, and Fusion. Performing and composing music, I have many inspirations from Pandit Ravi Shankar, Anoushka Shankar, The Beatles, AR Rahman and Niten Sawhney.

I was invited to participate with the BBC Concert Orchestra where I performed at The Royal Festival Hall, a concert called Raga Mela -The Spirit of India blended with the West. The performance was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. I met and worked with composer and workshop leader, Fraser Trainer. Watford Palace Theatre and The Hackney Empire are a few of many places where I performed with the BBC Concert Orchestra. These performances were an opportunity that opened the doors for my music career.

I continue my admiration for music by joining the Grand Union Youth Orchestra where some of the performances take place at Rich Mix, The Hackney Empire, Wilton’s Music Hall and many more venues. Summer programs with Grand Union at Oundle School led to more fusion compositions. This followed me on to a music apprenticeship scheme with Grand Union where I led a workshop of one of my original composition in a family music day event. Since then, I have been on a few radio stations including BBC Asian network and BBC Radio London where my music was aired.

I have been taking part in master class recording sessions at the London College of Music where my compositions have been recorded in the university’s Vestry Hall and the studios. I have also been exploring sounds for theatre and films based on Sitar.
