Renaissance composer Balduin Hoyoul (1547-1594) was a member of the Franco-Flemish school of composition. Born in Liege, he was, from the age of 13, a discant singer at the Court in Stuttgart. In 1589 he took over as Hofkapellmeister in Stuttgart. This release features perhaps his most well-known body of composition, the Sacrae Cantiones, performed by the Ensemble Hofkapelle. The Ensemble Hofkapelle was founded in 1998 by Michael Procter and Edzard Burchards with the aim of performing Renaissance music in an authentic way. The ensemble allows the singers to deal intensively with the music from 1450 to 1650 and gain a thorough knowledge of its theoretical foundation.
