From a simple upbringing in a little Australian beach town in NSW to travelling the world on stage after joining Kasey Chambers band at just 19 years old as her guitar player, Brandon Dodd, now 24, has already experienced more than most musicians dream of in a lifetime.
And so it was inevitable that this would lead to his own diverse debut solo project - ‘What A Way To Die’ will be released February 14, 2020.
Spending the last 5 years in many different countries, cultures and visiting almost every city and remote town in Australia, Brandon joined Kasey’s band back in 2014 and has immersed himself in music and travel ever since.
Also fronting the alternative blues/rock band Grizzlee Train-winners of 2015 Byron Bay Bluesfest Busking Comp-for 6 years, Brandon’s guitar playing & singing have already been established, his eclectic styles & influences have been explored but this debut solo album is where his songwriting really shines.
His sudden change in lifestyle from a straightforward Aussie upbringing to a unique life on the road across the world is evident in both lyrics & sounds throughout this record.
From the unique sounds and depth in lyrics of the opening track and single from the album, ‘Absolute’ to the raw, heartfelt alt-country duet with Kasey Chambers on ‘like a diamond’, Brandon shows another side of himself along with his obvious love of Blues and edgy rock guitar sounds that will make you wonder if this young musician has a soul much older than his years suggest.
'Absolute' was written about one of Dodd's favourite places in the world, Zambia, Africa. He explains: "Over the past couple of years I have been lucky enough to go over to teach music at a small school there called ‘Our Rainbow House’. That place feels like my second home now. The amazing people that I have met through that school were the inspiration behind this song. My first time visiting Africa I could see that there was beauty in everything, the people, the culture, the landscapes, the animals. But the thing I love most about being at that school, with those kids and teachers in that little town is that it is real. It is absolute."
The album came to life at The Rabbit Hole Recording Studio - a small NSW Central Coast studio run by Brandon & Kasey Chambers - where he is experienced in working as a producer & engineer on many other artists projects.
Co-produced by himself and Melbourne based Damian Cafarella (Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes) it’s obvious that this album has a magic that can only be captured by two good friends with equal respect for each other’s talent when they jam together for a week in a home studio on a bunch of well written, honest songs.
‘What A Way To Die’ is not just a debut album but a self-exploration and musical journey that takes the listener through the life of a young musician.
