Comprising Towanda, Trina and Tamar Braxton, the younger sisters of LaFace Records’ Toni Braxton, the Braxtons launched their own career in the mid-90s as a hip-hop and soul-inspired vocal trio. The idea for the group developed when the sisters joined Toni on her concert and television appearances. Indeed, when the group was first launched in 1990 it had featured Toni, as well as a fifth sister, Traci. However, the group in this formation recorded only one single for Arista Records; ‘Good Life’ reached number 79 on Billboard’s Hot R&B chart, but was never followed up. The present trio would doubtless have remained members of the LaFace roster, but when Bryant Reid moved to a new A&R position at Atlantic Records, he persuaded the group to follow him. The group’s Atlantic debut featured 11 original tracks with two cover versions, Diana Ross’ ‘The Boss’ and Klymaxx’s ‘I’d Still Say Yes’. Production was supplied by R&B luminaries Jermaine Dupri, Darryl Simmons and Louie Vega, among others. The sisters subsequently concentrated on solo work, with Tamar releasing her DreamWorks debut in March 2000.
