The Mariani piano quartet on the new album Idée fixe, Vol. 2 fully exploits the tonal force and tonal extremes, the richness of colors and the finest dynamic nuances of the monumental piano quartets Faurés and Enescus.
While the album Idée fixe, Vol. 1, which had been excellently discussed by critics, presented the similarities of the composition styles of the two with the second piano quartet Faurés and the first Enescus, the CD Idée fixe, Vol. 2 also makes its compositional relationship tangible. However, the compilation also demonstrates how Enescu moves away from his teacher's style.
The two piano quartets recorded by Mariani, Fauré's first in C minor, op. 15 and Enescu's second in D minor, op. 30, which he dedicated "to the memory of his master Gabriel Fauré", each shape an idée fixe that underlies almost all topics in all sentences. The scores of both works seem to be overloaded with dynamic, agogic and articulatory instructions. But these guidelines aim for a consistently lively, polyphonic sound speech that the Mariani Quartet creates in a fascinating way. In his thoughtful and passionate as well as transparent playing, it not only sings, but speaks - in the deepest sense of the word. The CD is produced in cooperation with rbb Radio Berlin-Brandenburg.
