07. The Belle of New York (excerpts, arr. C. Godfrey, Jr. for orchestra)

Gustave Kerker was a genuine great in the genre of popular theatre. Although largely forgotten today, he had a successful career in America, England and Germany.

Burning to Sing is a parody of grand, tragic opera, presented as a one-act drama. This is a highly amusing satiric piece with death arias, crude plots and a suitably melodramatic orchestral accompaniment.

In 1898 The Bell of New York was a celebrated triumph in London at the Shaftesbury Theatre. It enjoyed a remarkable 697 performances.

'Kerker's tunes are catchy and his dance rhythms are toe-tappers...I have to say I spent an agreeable 90 minutes acquainting myself with Kerker, whose skill and sense of humour occasional take wing. He certainly keeps you entertained.' --International Record Review, April 2013, Hugh Canning
