Mikko PettinenWhy Notis a new jazz quartet from Helsinki that was founded in September 2018. Pettinen, the leader of the group is an award-winning (International Carmine Caruso Jazz Trumpet Soloist Competition, Getxo Jazz Group contest) trumpet player/multi-instrumentalist (Umo Jazz Orchestra, Helsinki-Cotonou Ensemble, Mikko Pettinen & Happy People, Higher Ground Vocals) who has composed the music especially for this band.
An acoustic jazz meets electronic effects, ethnic flavours and unusual instrumentations in Why Not´s music : Pettinen plays trumpet, flugelhorn, cornet, sings and plays keyboards and uses effects pedals and loopers to bring a variety of interesting colours to the music. The sounds that are not common in jazz music.
Joakim Berghäll(Berghäll Triality, Helsinki-Cotonou Ensemble, Ismo Alanko, Tsuumi Sound System) is an extraordinary multi talent: an amazing baritone saxophone player, but he also plays bass clarinet and cello in this band. He can also play guitar, piano, drums, bass and percussion. He is familiar with any style: jazz, free jazz, rock, world music, funk and he is a master in using different effect pedals.
The bass player Vesa Ojaniemi(Aapo Heinonen Quintet, Umo Jazz Orchestra, Kasperi Sarikoski Nuance) is also a multitalent: he plays double bass, electric bass, midi bass and he can make the samplers and drum machines sound like organic instruments.
The drummer Tuomas Timonen(Herd Trio, Yona, Tuomas J. Trio) is a very versatile drummer and he plays many styles effortlessly and with a spirit. He adds exciting colours to his sound palette with a Sensory Percussion software.
While composing the music for the band Pettinen was (and still is) insipired by the climate change, the state of the planet Earth, dystopia and the nature.
”I wanted to write something new and surprising for myself, my band mates and the listeners. I wanted to challenge myself to use odd meters and I bought an electric Indian tabla machine to be able to practise those odd meters that I was unfamiliar with. Those tabla rhythms were so fascinating and groovy, that I started composing tunes to those rhtyhm loops. At the same time I called the musicians that I wanted for this band. They said yes and the magic started happening right away on our first rehearsals. The chemistry among the band members is truly unique and there is a lot of potential in this band to evolve to something great.
The first song that I composed for Why Not is ”The Last Changes” which is based on one of the most common chord sequences in pop music (VI – IV – I – V), but in 5/8 and 7/8 meter with altered tones and chords. Vesa Ojaniemi has arranged the electronic background for the tune, which sounds mystic, abstract, but also organic and it sometimes reminds of a David Lynch movie.
Another song that I wrote for the band is called ”Kolaajat (Saving The Species)”, which is dedicated to the volunteers in lake Saimaa surroundings who make snow piles for the endangered Saimaa ringed seals, because they make nests only to the places that have enough snow on top of the ice. Thanks to the climate change, there hasn´t been enough snow in Saimaa area in recent years. The work of volunteers has saved the lives of dozens of young ringed seals in many winters.
That prooves that we really can save the planet if decide to act. Why notdo it now?
Kolaajat recycles some short melodic motives from the Finnish classic song Vanhoja Poikia Viiksekkäitä that tells a story of an old and lonely man who lives alone on the island and his only friend is an old and lonely Saimaa ringed seal.
Saimaa, India, Sahara, Helsinki, New York, Gozo Island, Africa. These are some of the places you can imagine about while listening to the musical journey of Mikko Pettinen Why Not.
The future plans of the Mikko Pettinen Why Not include the recording and releasing our debut album and performing and touring nationally and internationally and spreading our musical message.
