Tranquebar was formed in April 2011 by Grit Jansen (vocal), Nicolai Kaarsen (banjo), Michael Schultz-Larsen (cajon), and Anders Kristian Munk (accordion), wtih Anders Bo Eriksen (tuba) joining in July 2014.
The band has performed at a number of Copenhagen venues, including Copenhagen Jazz House, Kind of Blue, Huset, Retro, Litteraturhaus, Jazzcup, PH Caféen, Røde Roses Kaffebar, Bopa, Studenterhuset, Bådudlejningen, Café Cornelius, Bevar's, Drop Inn, Edison and Ingolfs Kaffebar, as well as on Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Fanø Free Folk, Havnens Høstfest, Kancellifestivalen, and the street parties in Jægersborggade, Blågårdsgade og Skydebanegade.
In its early years the band contributed to the revival of the yard singer tradition in Copenhagen. Thus, from the summer of 2011 and onwards Tranquebar has played countless unannounced performances on bars and street corners. The first took place on the snooker table of Fingerbøllet (the Thimble) on Christianshavn and it has since developed into many late nights and early mornings on legendary watering holes like Lille Peter, Stefanshus, Riesen, Karusellen, Lord Nelson or Børges Bodega. On a good night in fair winds the battery powered amp is good for for 4 to 5 pop-up concerts straight. Besides that, Tranquebar is a regular at Le Petit in Torvehallerne, Sweet Treat on Christianshavn, and CMYK kælderen in Jægersborggade, where the repertoire gets tuned and updated.
In autumn 2013 Tranquebar released their first record in collaboration with 11 artists tasked with illustrating each their tune. The cover includes art by Sanne Fredin, Morten Steinbach, Lisa Strøander, Meik Brüsch, Maj Horn, Morten Krogh/Mette Bersang, My Bueman, Grit Jansen, Caroline Arvidsson, Hlynur Palmasson and Wout Wolf Stroucken. The overall layout is designed by Rasmus Lund Mathiesen.
