When he won the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow in 1986, Dublin-born Barry Douglas became the first Western pianist to win the prestigious competition since Van Cliburn nearly four decades before. Since then, Douglas has performed with such orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaud, Israel Philharmonic, and Tokyo Symphony, as well as various orchestras in London, Philadelphia, Chicago, Cleveland, and Los Angeles. A member of the all-Irish chamber orchestra Camerata Island, he performed for then-President Bill Clinton at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast. The performance was filmed by Landseer Productions. Although known for his mastery of pieces by well-known composers of the Romantic era, including Brahms, Rachmaninoff, and Tchaikovsky, Douglas has been equally impressive performing the work of lesser-known composers, including Max Reger, Benjamin Britten, and John Corigliano. His debut album, Artist Series: Barry Douglas, featured an interpretation of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Douglas appeared with Shirley MacLaine in the 1988 film Madame Sousatzka. He received an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2002 for "services to music."
