AllMusic Review by Matt Whalley
Bruce Lose, from the San Francisco punk band Flipper, said that he would play pop songs on his bass over and over again until they didn't sound at all like the original. In the same way, Jackson & His Computer Band sounds like they've taken pop songs and remixed them and remixed them until they only barely resemble the songs they started out as. This makes for an interesting new take on the Warp's signature glitchy IDM. Jackson lands closer to Prefuse 73 than Aphex Twin but is not at all hip-hop based. Smash is a sound collage that is always on beat, making the tracks almost danceable and catchy without giving into pop-dance sound. The songs are fused together with compressed bass and chopped and screwed melodies that stay fairly regular throughout the album. Unlike Warp artist, Chris Clark's albums, melody is still important on these tracks but they still lack the huge bass that Clark uses so well. The album needs a track like "Govel (Obliterated)" from Clark's Empty the Bones of You to make it a real classic, but it is consistent throughout and adds something new to the genre. Smash is a challenging new look from a Warp artist and foreshadows bigger, fuller tracks in the future.
