With the exception of Mi Haish (a contemporary Israeli composition, integrated here for the relevance of his sacred text), the recording includes music written in the style of Nusach Ashkenaz - a distinctly European Jewish musical tradition that traces its music to the in Western and Central Europe and particularly in Germany (hence the name Ashkenaz, which means "German" in Hebrew).
The American composers interpreted in this recording reflect the change in the European tradition of Lewandowski, Naumburg, Alter and others after his transplantation and transformation into the New World. Max Janowski, organist and composer of German origin who lived in Chicago, is the most remarkable example of this Euro-American musical transition. Gerald Cohen, an American Jewish composer, was also inspired by the traditions and style of the European synagogue while softening it with more folkloric and contemporary themes.
What makes this recording particularly exciting are the presentations and interpretations of the musical tradition sung by Cantor Sofia Falkovitch, accompanied by Raphael Tambyeff.
