This is another sensational performance of Saint-Säens’ Oratorio de Noël. If this ain’t a masterpiece, it’s so damned close. The singers and choir are stellar. The Dresden Philharmonic brings more of a symphonic strength to Opus 12 than its French counterpart: being the man I am, I appreciate this. Perhaps ‘Expectants expectavi Dominum’ is more seductively sung in the French version but there ain’t much between them. Both do the work justice. So this is Christmas - what have you done?
But wait - there’s more!
I should have known that the composer of ‘Hark the Herald, Angels sing!’ was hardwired to Christmas as a phenomenon. Mendelssohn’s cantata ‘Vom Himmel hoch’, composed in 1831, is a hoot. Again, it’s an inspired update of BWV 248. Just listen to its opening – it is more Christmas-y than Bing Crosby. I do not understand why it is so unknown. The close of the first movement brings Lobgesang to mind whereas 'Sei willekomm, du edler Gast' - sung here beatifically by Ute Selbig - is beautiful beyond words.

Flamig was a wonderful and much under-rated conductor - his recording of Bach's Christmas Oratorio, also available here, is sensational.
