Praised for her interpretations of both classical and contemporary music, violist Rose Wollman is sought after as a soloist, chamber musician, and teacher. Performance engagements have brought her to Europe and Asia, as well as venues all over North America. She is a founding member of the Larchmere String Quartet, the Petar Jankovich Ensemble, and the Wollman-Longendyke Duo. Rose’s many albums include Clarinet Quintet and String Quartet by Stephan Krehl with the LSQ for the NAXOS label and Homage to Nadia Boulanger with pianist Clare Longendyke which will be released in 2019 for the 40th anniversary of Ms. Boulanger’s death. Orchestral engagements have taken Rose to venues such as the KKL in Lucerne, Switzerland and Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Japan. She has played under such luminary conductors as Pierre Boulez, Fabio Luisi, Hugh Wolff, Joseph Silverstein, and Larry Rachleff.

A champion of promoting and performing new music, Rose has commissioned and premiered many pieces. She has worked with groundbreaking composers such as Pierre Boulez, Augusta Read Thomas, David Dzubay, Gabriela Ortiz, and Don Freund. Rose also enjoys bridging genres. She has recorded Latin jazz with Grammy nominees Wayne Wallace and Michael Spiro, and has played tango with Grammy winning bassist Pablo Aslan and renowned Argentinian pianist Julian Peralta.

Rose is viola faculty at the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary’s College, and Ritornello Ensemble Coordinator for Sacred Music at Notre Dame. She holds a D.M. from Indiana University as well as degrees from the New England Conservatory and the University of Illinois. Her dissertation outlines a method of viola technique-building using excerpts from viola repertoire, and emphasises technical development for non-tonal scale systems. As part of the Wollman-Longendyke Duo’s forthcoming recording project, Rose is creating a new edition of Piazzolla’s Le Grand Tango that will help classically trained violists perform it in an authentic tango style.
