For a brief period in the early '70s, Joe Henderson flirted with fusion and pop stardom. Besides his well-known, brief tenure with Blood, Sweat & Tears, he incorporated electronics into his group on a regular basis, and even did things in the studio with vocals and overdubs. The results, although far from his best, aren't as bad as might be expected. Multiple, a 1970 session reissued on CD, stands as a monument of that time. Henderson didn't skimp on the playing -- his solos are as brilliantly constructed and superbly executed as ever -- while bassist Dave Holland and drummer Jack DeJohnette are too good to sound like hacks. Only when Henderson's tame double-tracked vocals appear do things start to get a bit weak. ~ Ron Wynn
